3D Dynamo: AC and DC Simulation

A coil turns between magnet poles in 3D. Switch between slip rings (alternating output) and a split-ring commutator (pulsating DC with mean 2ε₀/π) and watch the coil's EMF and the terminal output side by side.

3D Dynamo: AC and DC is a Pro simulation

Pro opens all 125 virtual labs — 483 simulations with guides and quizzes.

How to use it

  1. 1Press play or step the angle.
  2. 2Switch between split ring and slip rings.
  3. 3Change speed, turns, field and area and watch the peak.

What to notice

  • The coil's EMF is NBAω sin ωt with either kind of rings.
  • The commutator swaps brushes when the EMF passes zero, so the output never reverses.
  • The EMF is largest when the coil's plane lies along the field.

About the 3D Dynamo: AC and DC simulation

A dynamo turns motion into electricity: a coil spins in a magnetic field, the flux through it changes, and an EMF ε = NBAω sin ωt is induced. This 3D simulation lets you switch the way the coil is connected to the outside circuit. With slip rings, each end of the coil stays on its own brush, so the output follows the coil's EMF and reverses every half turn: alternating current.

With a split-ring commutator the coil's two ends swap brushes every half turn — exactly when the EMF passes through zero — so every negative half-cycle is flipped up. The output keeps one direction: pulsating DC with the same peak and an average of 2ε₀/π. The graph shows the coil's EMF and the terminal output together so the difference is plain.

Also covers: dc dynamo, ac generator, split ring commutator, slip rings, brushes, pulsating dc, emf nbaw sin wt, electromagnetic induction.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an AC and a DC generator?

Only the connection to the outside circuit: slip rings pass the coil's alternating EMF straight through, a split-ring commutator reverses the connections every half turn so the output keeps one polarity.

When is the EMF of a rotating coil maximum?

When the coil's plane lies along the field. The flux through it is then zero but changing fastest.

Is the DC from a simple dynamo steady?

No — it pulsates between zero and the peak, averaging 2ε₀/π. Many coils at different angles smooth it out.
